„Historische Metamorphose: Von Kaufering nach Arénas“ ist ein Langzeitprojekt von Ilana Salama Ortar über Tonröhren, die ursprünglich von der Organisation TODT für das KZ Kaufering VII verwendet und später im jüdischen Transitlager Arénas in Marseille als Baumaterial wiederverwendet wurden. Dort lebten von 1946 bis 1966 jüdische Geflüchtete aus Europa und Nordafrika. 2024 wurde das Projekt erstmals in Deutschland gezeigt – an der Schoa-Gedenkstätte der EZB Frankfurt („Rush Hour“, Heussenstamm-Stiftung) und danach im Jüdischen Museum Frankfurt („Im Angesicht des Todes“). 2025 folgte eine neue Phase unter dem Titel „Habeas Corpus“ in Tel Aviv – eine Reaktion auf das Massaker vom 7. Oktober 2023. Bei diesem exklusiven Atelierbesuch thematisiert die Künstlerin individuelle Verantwortung in Kriegszeiten und zeigt anhand ausgewählter Werke und Einblicke in ihre Arbeitsweise den Wandel der Tonflasche in Zeichnung, Skulptur, Glas, Klang und Video.

Dr. Ilana Salama Ortar ist eine interdisziplinäre Künstlerin und Kuratorin, deren Arbeit sich mit Vertreibung, Identität, dem Begriff von Heimat und Trauma auseinandersetzt. Sie wurde Anfang der 1950er Jahre in Alexandria, Ägypten, geboren und floh mit ihrer Familie mit einem Ausreisevisum ohne Rückkehrrecht. Auf dem Weg nach Israel durchliefen sie ein jüdisches Transitlager. Ihr sephardisches Erbe und ihre persönliche Erfahrung der Vertreibung prägen ihr künstlerisches und forschendes Engagement mit dem „Anderen“ in geopolitischen Konflikten.

Ortar studierte Kunstgeschichte an der Hebräischen Universität Jerusalem und promovierte an der Roehampton University in London. Ihre immersiven, ortsspezifischen Installationen verbinden Objekte, Zeichnungen, Klang, Film und anthropomorphe Modelle. Ihre Forschung wurde unter anderem in „The Camp of the Jews“ (2005), ihrer Dissertation, sowie in Beiträgen für israelische und internationale Fachzeitschriften veröffentlicht.

Historical Metamorphosis: From Kaufering to Arénas is a long-term project by Ilana Salama Ortar about the clay pipes that were originally used by Organisation TODT for the Kaufering VII concentration camp and later reused as building material in the Jewish transit camp Arénas in Marseille. Jewish refugees from Europe and North Africa lived there from 1946 to 1966. In 2024, the project was shown for the first time in Germany at the Shoah Memorial of the ECB in Frankfurt (Rush Hour, Heussenstamm Foundation) and then at the Jewish Museum in Frankfurt (In the Face of Death). In 2025, a new phase followed in Tel Aviv under the title Habeas Corpus – a reaction to the massacre of October 7, 2023. During this exclusive studio visit, the artist will address the topic of individual responsibility in times of war and, using selected works and insights into her working methods, will demonstrate how the clay bottle has been transformed into drawing, sculpture, glass, sound, and video.

Dr. Ilana Salama Ortar is an interdisciplinary artist and curator whose work deals with displacement, identity, the concept of home, and trauma. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, in the early 1950s, she fled with her family on an exit visa without the right of return. On their way to Israel, they passed through a Jewish transit camp. Her artistic and research interests in the "other" within geopolitical conflicts has been shaped by her Sephardic heritage and her personal experience of displacement.

Ortar studied art history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and received her doctorate from Roehampton University in London. Her immersive, site-specific installations combine objects, drawings, sound, film, and anthropomorphic models. Her research has been published in The Camp of the Jews (2005) and in her dissertation, as well as in Israeli and international journals.
