Im Oktober jährt sich zum vierzigsten Mal die Bühnenbesetzung, bei der Jüdinnen und Juden die Bühne des Schauspiel Frankfurt besetzten und so die Uraufführung von Fassbinders Stück „Der Müll, die Stadt und der Tod“ verhinderten. Sie setzten nicht nur ein starkes Zeichen gegen Antisemitismus im Kulturbetrieb – die Bühnenbesetzung war auch eine Form der Selbstermächtigung, mit der sich die jüdische Gemeinschaft in der Bundesrepublik erstmals öffentlich Gehör verschaffte. Was von der Bühnenbesetzung geblieben ist und wie es derzeit um den deutschen Kunst- und Kulturbetrieb steht, wird an diesem Abend Thema sein.

This October will mark the 40th anniversary of the day on which Jewish men and women took over the stage of the Schauspiel Frankfurt theater during the premiere of Fassbinder's play Der Müll, die Stadt und der Tod (Garbage, the City and Death) and refused to leave. Not only was this occupation a strong statement against antisemitism in the cultural sector, but it was also a form of self-empowerment in which the Jewish community made its voice heard publicly for the first time in the Federal Republic of Germany. This evening will explore what has remained of this protest and what to make of the current state of the German arts and culture sector.
